Call for the Latvian state scholarships for studies and research

Citizens from more than 40 eligible countries are welcome to apply online for the Latvian state scholarships for studies and research. Call for applications for the academic year 2021/2022 is open from 1st February to 1st April. Latvian state scholarships are provided for international students, researchers, academic and scientific teaching staff at Latvian higher education institutions.

International students may enter Latvia

According to the decision of the Latvian government on 21 January 2021, international students may travel to Latvia if they meet all the travel restrictions set by the government. When entering Latvia, proof of a negative Covid-19 test must be presented, which must be taken not earlier than 72 hours before boarding the carrier's vehicle or before crossing the Latvian border individually.

5 top high-ranking universities from Latvia in the QS University Rankings Emerging Europe & Central Asia (EECA) 2021 are the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Rīga Stradiņš University, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, and Daugavpils University, as the newest results have been published on 16 December 2020.

In 2021, the first study semester for new international students will take place remotely

Those international students who will start their studies in Latvian higher education institutions for the first time after January 1, 2021, in the first semester will study and take examinations only remotely. If the practical part of the studies is planned in the first semester, the higher education institution must transfer it to another study semester. This decision is temporary and will be reviewed as soon as studies at Latvian higher education institutions can resume.

UPDATED: State of emergency has been extended in Latvia until 6 April

From 9 November a new state of emergency was declared in Latvia in order to control the spread of Covid-19 in a view of the epidemiological assessments of the growing risks. On December 1 state of emergency has been extended until 25 January. During this period strict medical safety measures are introduced, while ensuring compliance with the basic rights of the country’s residents and enabling them to access essential services.

In Latvia, the admission at several higher education institutions (HEI) takes place twice a year. The admission process for the February 2021 intake has started and interested students are welcome to apply this autumn according to the deadlines set by the universities and start their studies the next semester.

RSU approved for participation in Erasmus+ Joint Master programme

It is a prestigious, integrated and international study programme, jointly delivered by an international consortium of universities in Erasmus+ countries.

Latvia sets out rules for study process in the new study year

As of 1 August 2020 higher education institutions will be allowed to restart the study process in a face-to-face (full time) mode. The government kas adopted a list of precautionary measures recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in education institutions. These decisions include a number of specific measures that will govern the study process for foreign students in Latvian higher education institutions.

Latvia has increased the controlling of travellers to limit the spread of Covid-19

On Wednesday, 15 July, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia adopted several decisions in order to be able to collect information about travellers entering Latvia more effectively, thus improving the ability to check compliance with self-isolation rules and to trace the spread of the Covid-19 infection. The need for third-country nationals to travel to Latvia to obtain visas and residence permits has also been reduced.

Changes made to the admission requirements regarding the proof of the study language proficiency

As a result of the emerged restrictions in the past months, applicants have had more limited opportunities to timely provide the necessary internationally recognized English proficiency certificate. In order to reduce the impact of the current crises on the opportunities of international students to apply for studies in Latvia, the amendments were made on 3 July to the admission requirements regarding the proof of the study language proficiency.

Two Latvian universities join the European Universities Initiative

On Thursday, 9 July the European Commission (EC) announced that 24 additional alliances of the European Universities will join the first 17 alliances of higher education institutions selected already in 2019. Two Latvian universities - Riga Technical University and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences - will join the consortia of the European Universities Initiative.

The application call for the Latvian state scholarships competition for studies and research for the academic year 2020/2021 is completed. 119 applicants from 27 countries have been nominated for a study or research scholarship. In 2020, 348 applications where received, thus the competition among the applicants was quite tough.

The fourth call for PostDocLatvia research proposals

The State Education Development Agency (VIAA) has announced the fourth competition for selecting research applications under the Post-doctoral Research Aid programme. Researchers who have acquired PhD degree less than 5 years before the deadline for application submission and foreign researchers, including from non-EU countries, are encouraged to apply.

State of emergency extended until June 9, some restrictions eased

The emergency situation in place in Latvia due to COVID-19 has been extended until June 9, but some of the strict measures in place currently will be slightly relaxed. Restrictions will be eased in the areas of education, sports, various events and gatherings, transportation, and tourism. Strict adherence to all physical distancing and epidemiological safety measures on a daily basis in all areas are still in force.

The results of the Latvian state scholarship competition will be announced in June

On 1st of April, 2020, the application for Latvian state scholarships for studies and research for the 2020/2021 academic year was completed. This year, the State Education Development Agency of Latvia has received 348 applications from foreigners in 33 countries. An administrative and quality evaluation of the applications has been started and the results of the scholarship competition will be announced in June 2020.

The state of emergency has been declared in Latvia to control coronavirus

Following the World Health Organization's declaration of a global pandemic, trom 13th of March to 14th of April the state of emergency has been declared in Latvia in order to control the spread of the coronvirus Covid-19. With additional precautionary measures, which came into force on 16th of March the restrictions will affect the work of educational establishments, public assembly, movement outside the state borders and other areas.

Campaign about IT study opportunities in Latvia is launched in Ukraine and Lithuania

In order to increase the number of Information Technology (IT) graduates in Latvia, the IT Education Foundation’s project “Baltic IT Society” or BITS has launched a campaign in Ukraine and Lithuania about IT study opportunities in Latvia. This will help to meet the goal of 3000 IT graduates per year that are needed for the labor market in Latvia. The BITS platform compiles the nine best IT study programs in different universities of Latvia, and information is available electronically.
