Before applying, students need to find a study programme, university and check admission requirements. Students should directly address the chosen university. Each university sets their own admission requirements. Please visit university's website to find out about application and exams in details. Study in Latvia does not administer admission, visa and residence permit processes.
In order to apply for studies in Latvia, you should follow these 4 simple steps:
Step 1 – Check admission requirements at the chosen university and send an application
Step 2 – Prepare for the entrance check (incl. Exams and sufficient English)
Step 3 – Sign the study agreement
Step 4 – Manage visa and residence permit
For an admission to a university, there are some general requirements binding on all higher education institutions and some institution-specific requirements.
All applicants applying for a definite level of studies (bachelor, master or doctoral-level studies) must have an attested certificate or qualification allowing to pursue the desired studies. Applicants also need to hold an internationally recognized English proficiency certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL) or some institutions may run individual language tests. Language proficiency requirements have to be checked with an individual education institution.
N.B. In order to study in Latvia the applying students should be aware that before proceeding with the application process / signing the agreement / applying for the residence permit the documents, the admission office of the chosen university will send your education documents for verification (recognition). In order to be enrolled for a college or bachelor’s degree programme, a document attesting to the acquisition of secondary education is necessary. Applicant’s secondary education certificate must correspond to the Latvian standard. The overall procedure of evaluation and recognition of foreign credentials is stated in the Law on Education, Article 11.
Additional qualifying examinations may also be required for the admission of undergraduate studies in Latvia. Additional requirements on what other documents need to be submitted are determined by each individual education institution according to the entrance regulations, therefore check
Applicants, who wish to purse master-level studies, must have completed bachelor-level studies, for doctoral-level studies completed master-level studies.
Student exchange is based on bilateral agreements between partner institutions or different exchange programs (i.e. Erasmus+) facilitating higher education students to study and train abroad during the course of the programme.
