Three Latvian universities ranked in the THE World University Rankings 2021

Three Latvian universities have been included in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021, as the newest results show published on 2nd September, 2020.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings include global performance tables that judge more than 1500 research-intensive universities in the world.

In order to compare the performance of universities, 13 calibrated indicators grouped in 5 areas such as teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industry income (knowledge transfer) are used under the methodology.

University of Latvia (LU) – ranked 601 - 800

The University of Latvia has been ranked 601-800, taking the leading position amongst the three ranked universities in Latvia and the second position among all the Baltic countries after Tartu University, which ranks 251–300. The results have improved in four out of five areas, showing high performance in research (rank – 504), international outlook (rank – 561) and industry income (rank – 564).

As the rector of the University of Latvia, Indriķis Muižnieks, has emphasized, the high results in research reputation, cross-disciplinary and highly cited publications at the university have been achieved with the help of joint work of all the university, modern Academic centre and latest technologies.

Riga Technical University (RTU) – ranked 1001+

Riga Technical University has been ranked 1001+, showing the high 284 rank in the area of industry income. This high rank of RTU in this indicator has remained unchanged for the past years allowing RTU to be placed among the world’s TOP 300 universities with strong cooperation with the industry.

The overall results have improved in four out of five areas – research, international outlook, teaching and industry income, which has allowed RTU to retain its place in the 1000+ university group.

As the communication project manager of Riga Technical University, Gundega Preisa, has explained, the university collaborates actively with companies, having more than 100 contracts annually in different sectors developing new technologies and products, conducting research, testing, prototyping, providing consultations, opinions and other knowledge-based services.

Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LLU) – ranked 1001+

Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies has been ranked 1001+, showing improved results in research, citations and international outlook in comparison with the last year, when the university was included in the rankings for the first time. 

LLU shows the highest results in research and international outlook, correspondingly ranking 637 in research in comparison with 714 rank last year and 865 in international outlook in comparison with 913 rank in 2020.

1,500 universities from 93 countries were included

THE World University Rankings 2021 include more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions, making these rankings the largest and most diverse university rankings to date. This year’s ranking analysed more than 80 million citations across over 13 million research publications and included survey responses from 22,000 scholars globally.

The University of Oxford tops the rankings for the fifth consecutive year followed by Stanford University and Harvard University.
