Four Latvian universities have been ranked in the SCImago Institutions Ranking 2020, which evaluates the scientific activities of not only universities but also of research institutions around the world.

The ranking is based on the data retrieved from databases that provide information on various scientific results, as well as from platforms collecting data on the impact of research on society.

In the overall ranking of 2020, Riga Stradiņš University ranks 673rd in the world and 1st among Latvian universities. The University of Latvia is ranked 730th in the world and 2nd at national level. Riga Technical University ranks 760th in the world and 3rd among Latvian universities. Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies ranks 845th in the world and 4th among Latvian higher education institutions.

The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked by a composite indicator that combines three different sets of indicators based on research performance, innovation outputs and societal impact measured by their web visibility.

Comparing results at the level of each indicator separately in this year’s SCImago Ranking, Latvian universities show best results at Societal Rank and are placed 225th – 236th. At Research Rank Latvian universities are in the 404th – 475th place, but at Innovation Rank they rank 440th – 540th.

The institutional ranking has been published by the SCImago Institutions Rankings annually since 2009, and it was developed by the Spanish research organisation SCImago Lab in close cooperation with international partners. The latest edition of the rankings includes a total of 7,026 institutions from all over the world.
