|Study programme description||The philosophy doctoral study programme is aimed at holders of master’s degree willing to pursue academic studies and acquire a doctoral degree in philosophy. The compulsory part includes the doctoral thesis, three promotional examinations, three academic publications in philosophy, monthly research seminars, yearly international research seminars, as well as lectures on trends in 21st century philosophy and international philosophical organisations. Restricted choice courses include new developments in the 21st century philosophy of culture, relevant issues in aesthetics and social philosophy, emerging trends in inter-cultural philosophy, philosophy of history, phenomenology, philosophy of Enlightenment, approaches in philosophical humanism.
Optional courses are mainly focused on development of individual academic teaching skills. On successfully completing the programme, students will acquire a wide array of academic competences, including in-depth knowledge of their research field and understanding of current academic approaches, as well as hands-on competences: academic writing, research project management, communication, argumentation and teaching skills.

Accommodation possibilities and costs: The University of Latvia offers university dormitories for all international students. International students are housed in single, double or triple rooms with a common kitchen for every 5 rooms. Linen, blankets and pillows are provided as well as some kitchen utensils. The costs start at 100 EUR per month (more information here).
If you do not wish to stay at a dormitory, it is advisable to make private housing arrangements beforehand.
